Train your dog to “stay.” “Stay” is really an extension of “sit,” so these commands should be taught in that order. Teaching a big dog to stay is important because it can prevent your dog from rushing too close to people. To teach stay, command your dog to sit, then take a step backward. Say the word “stay.” If the dog does not move, provide a reward. When you begin training your dog, plan to do 2 sessions per day, for around minutes each. Many people have success doing 1 session in the morning, and 1 in the afternoon. The best way to polish your skills and practice other approaches is by working with dogs who aren’t your own.

All dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than scolding or punishing, but it’s especially important with big dogs, because you never want to give the dog a reason to be aggressive. Rather than trying to fight bad habits, focus on teaching good behaviors. Punishment is operationally defined as an event that lowers the probability of the behavior that it follows. It is not “punishment” in the common sense of the word, and does not mean physical or psychological harm and most certainly does not mean abuse. A behavior that has previously been developed may cease if reinforcement stops; this is called extinction. A dog that paws its owner for attention will eventually stop if it no longer receives attention. Some dogs are more interested in toys, and you need to consider toys as a positive reinforcement tool as well.

Prong collars are tools employed by some “balanced” dog trainers for working on things like pulling or leash reactivity. They rely on positive punishment, which is a quadrant of learning that involves adding (aka the “positive” part of positive punishment) negative sensations to decrease the likelihood of an unwanted behavior. To get your dog to be obedient, you should focus on training that uses obedience techniques and the specific behaviors you want from them. Both aversive- and reward-based training have been proven to work.
